If a society is not diverse because it’s intentionally marginalizing or excluding people on the basis of race, even if subtly, then yes, “pious liberals” object frequently and often. I enjoyed visiting Japan, but the societal message that foreigners are not worthy to mix with Japanese, seen in establishments that overtly exclude non-Japanese, is offensive. Thankfully, that attitude seems to be slowly fading out among the younger generation.
