We call these folks “The Offenderati”. Count me in as a cheerfully Hispanic Ace fan. It strikes me as someone looking to be victimized, and it astounds me that anyone would allow a word to have so much power to wound them. Like they’re making it into a bullet then flinging themselves in front of it.
Maybe we should demand that six-year-olds everywhere start calling their guinea pigs “cavies”, and that no one ever use onomatopoeia to describe the sound of a helicopter blade.

I’m not sure what he was talking about with the Tirpitz either. The Tirpitz was the sister ship of the Bismark. It spent most of the war stuck in dock due to the British blockade. IIRC, The British sent bombers to sink it a few times, finally succeeding near the end of the war. There were something like 200 survivors. About 900 went down with the ship.

I think he was thinking of the Hood when he said Tirpitz.

I think what they were saying is that a “chink” is an architectural term for a fissure, crack, cleft or narrow opening. It is not racist to use words in their correct connotation, and it would be overcorrecting for Penguin books to replace “the chink of a wall” in Midsummer Night’s Dream “the crack in a wall.” It would be racist to make a driving joke when Lin had an awesome drive to the basket, but it’s overly sensitive to assume that if “Lin” and “drive” are used in the same sentence that it is racist. It’s getting to the point in society where if someone says “lighten up”, the speaker can be accused of racism, because someone misinterprets “lighten up” as a skin color issue telling everyone to be whiter. We are losing our freedom of speech because of oversensitivity.
