Adam and Albert Brooks

Adam and Albert Brooks

Listen to the Adam Carolla Podcast

Show Summary

Adam has been waiting for this moment forever: sitting in Albert Brooks’ office for an extended one-on-one chat. Right at the top, Adam reads the segment of his book where he praises Brooks’ comedic abilities, and the guys also chat about Brooks’ new book, ‘2030: The Real Story of What Happens To America’. The guys then talk about ‘complisults’ and the odds of one day having a half-Jewish president.

Later, the guys discuss some of their pet peeves when it comes to the movies. Albert doesn’t like it when characters are funnier than the actual person would be in real life, and Adam complains about 555 numbers. They also agree that sloppy dialogue can ruin a movie even if you can’t put your finger on what’s wrong. Adam also talks with Brooks about having set an extremely high bar for himself comedically, and how that affects his interactions with other comedians. Brooks honestly conveys his feelings about receiving criticism, and whether or not people actually care about what you do.

Adam and Brooks also talk about their relationships with their siblings, and their successes in the field of writing books. Adam compliments Brooks on one of his all time favorite films, ‘Defending Your Life’, and Brooks suggests that it may be optioned for a Broadway musical. The guys also relate to their daughters growing up and maturing into women, and as the show wraps up, they talk about the battle of the sexes, and the future of sexuality.

I think alot of these year-end ‘Best Of‘ podcasts aren’t really the best/most entertaining podcasts of the year at all, rather they are just the podcasts with the guests Adam personally respects the most. I mean Albert Brooks? Smart guy, but boring podcast, Bryan Cranston? Talented guy, but boring podcast, Ira Glass? Well he’s just a dick, AND a boring podcast guest. Basically alot of the most entertaining podcasts this year were when Adam either didnt respect the guest, or the guest was an idiot and Adam argued with them. Big names like Seth MacFarlane is great and all, but the best, funniest, most memorable moments of 2011 were simple stuff like Dr. Bruce and listener call ins. DAG is great tho, I want an all DAG week.

      I disagree

This is easily the worst podcast of the year. Albert Brooks is a dick. Just look at him in the picture. Doesn’t sounds like he is a fan of Ace.

It’s sad but true. I thought Brooks would have brought something to the table, but according to Kevin Polak on Mark Maron’s podcast he had no interest in doing the show, his publicist made him come on. Too bad Adam didn’t realize it, Brooks could have given this format a better chance. Polak and Brooks both overestimate their comedic relevances in my book. They’ve definitely done some big things but if you’re not brining it your not bringing it.

This was painful. I felt bad for Ace. Brooks didn’t want to be there, and was going through the motions. I think he was wincing at Adam’s movie preferences and political views.

Interesting to me that Ace still talks about how great this interview was. Maybe I’m wrong, but I thought it was a disaster.

  5. Sig

I agree wholeheartedly with Eric V. These aren’t even close to the best shows of the year. Just people Adam likes.

Also, need some Dr. Drew in the hizzey.

  6. steve

    Cue DAG snoring sounds now.

  7. Dave

I think this was a good podcast.

The Zsa Zsa stuff was hilarious.

I think you either “get” Albert Brooks or you don’t. For those of you who didn’t enjoy this podcast, you are obviously in the latter catagory.

  8. samurai

Brooks is a uberlib, Adam is up and coming in a lib town. The picture shows obvious disdain for Adam.

Albert Brooks was an incredibly funny, insightful guest! One of the best! Thank you!

This was my favorite show of the year. I hope to hear him interviewed in the coming year.

I also agree with Eric V, these best-of shows should be called worst-of shows. These guys must of drank too much eggnog or something if they think Albert Brooks is a best-of LOL

  12. Spiel

What does Adam’s shirt say? The blue one he wears in all the photos under the two show shirts?

  13. marco

Sucks when your hero turns out to be a douchebag 🙁

This was hilarious! I don’t get all the negative comments, what a great guest!

  15. DrunktankDan

To be perfectly honest, I could not disagree with Adam more on several topics ranging from the political to the familial, but at the end of the day it is HIS show, and furthermore, it is fuckin FREE. You can bitch and moan all you want about a service that you pay good money for, but when you are voluntarily consuming a product that didn’t cost you a penny you really ought to just hit the mute button if you don’t like what you are hearing. Ace doesn’t owe you a thing.

Mostly it is just people, like me, who miss the show from the first year or so when it was laugh out loud funny. But Adam chucks long time friends aside and rants more about politics etc. Just stick with what is funny and works for most of us. We can get the politics crap anywhere, stick to showing how clueless our society is etc. And many people are and will responding by not listening as much, and eventually at all anymore, does not miss we do not miss the first 100 episodes just wish the show did not have to change so much.

Absolute highlight of this podcast was when Adam said his sister’s name was Super Lauren. lol and Brooks did not think it was funny at all.

  17. Kaiser The Great

I think it was an entertaining episode. Yes, Albert Brooks was negative and complained a lot, but Albert Brooks IS negative and complains a lot. That’s what’s funny about him. Did everyone expect Carrot Top like optimism when hitting play for this show? And that picture HAS to be a joke.
